Summary
The “Knowledge Garden” is a place to grow as people – not only to grow plants.
It provides students with a ‘grounding space’ – a place to think and clear your mind. This is also an area that the children can invite their parents and the wider community of Moffatdale to participate in planned activities.
The Knowledge garden is now an integral part of our sustainable vision. Combined with our Permaculture Garden and EarthSmart Science program, it continues to encourage children to make a commitment to reducing negative environmental impacts and increasing biodiversity in our school grounds. Students show an increased respect for our local flora and fauna and a greater understanding of ecosystems.
Two previously bare areas in the school are now beautiful and healthy. We receive constant comments on the butterflies within the school – which are everywhere! The Butterfly garden is full of blooming native plants surrounded by local granite rocks and mulched to prevent water loss and excess water usage. The large native trees are strong and quickly growing and will provide much needed shade and animal habitats in the future.
We have received many lovely comments, particularly from the youngest children at school. As a small school we find it difficult to fund projects such as this and are very grateful for the experience this grant has provided our students and community.
