St Michael’s Primary School

Project: Veggie Garden
Sponsor: Coles
Summary
St Michael’s Primary School in Tallangatta, near Albury in rural NSW, applied for a Coles Junior Landcare School Garden Grant in 2009 to help fund a school vegetable garden. They used their funding to purchase a shade house, worm farm, compost bin, seedling trays, seed raising mix, seeds and garden tools.
The school has had a vegetable garden for several years, but this funding has enabled the students to continue to grow their own produce and improve the quality of the vegetables grown.
It has also given students the knowledge of sustainable practices in regards to recycling the wastes from the school with the compost bin and worm farm. The school’s outgoing rubbish was reduced, and the juices extracted from the worm farm are used to fertilise the garden. Compost from the new bins is also used to improve soil quality in the veggie patch.
“St Michael’s school community would like to thank Landcare and Coles for their generous grant. Coles have been very generous with their kind gift of additional items for our veggie garden, and Landcare have been wonderful with their support throughout the process.”
