Summary

The Blackburn Pre-School’s “Help our Garden Grow” project aims to promote a positive and hands-on approach to learning and your sponsorship will provide our children and community with a wealth of opportunity to enjoy and nurture our local environment.  Blackburn Preschool Centre have Planted approximately 250 plants of native species around pre-school garden and in front of the pre-school grounds Removed Agapanthus sp from garden beds and replaced with native species and herbs. There was also a possum box Introduced to the pre-school grounds.

These efforts were also contributed to by 30 pre-school families plus 3 volunteers from Blackburn Lake Sanctuary Advisory Committee and the Friends of the Lake during a working bee day, and also technical and additional funding support was sources through The Whitehorse Council Nursery, Whitehorse Council EcoVision team -  Alicia Groves ~ Compost Bins and Worms Farms, The Blackburn Lake Sanctuary Advisory Committee, Friends of the Lake and Whitehorse Council, Bunnings Warehouse Nunawading- Funds and Planting Assistance, Coles Supermarkets Forest Hill- Funds and Seed Packet, Blackburn Pre-School Families donated seedlings and one family built and donated a possum-box.

One happy parent quoted  “The children have been so excited to watch the flowers bloom from the seedlings they planted. Some children even know the exact one they planted and are so proud. The children have been able to learn about caring for and looking after the garden.”
Also to supplement the garden program an excursion was held to visit The Ian Potter Foundation Children’s Garden and the students  participated in the Minibeast program.

A message from Blackburn Preschool Centre:  “Thank you very much to Landcare Australia and Coles Supermarkets for the generous donation of $1,100 to “Help our Garden Grow”.  This has allowed us to build on our existing garden program and will also provide our community with a great legacy for the future”.
