Summary
To provide a raised garden bed that will allow students with special needs to participate in the planting, maintenance and harvest of food crops within the school grounds. To be able to purchase some more tools to assist with the cultivation of the gardens.
The garden bed, garden loam, pea straw and potato seeds were used to illustrate the use of alternative methods to garden without actually digging into the ground. This is an excellent form of gardening to students with disabilities and also for the younger members of our school who lack the strength to turn over clods of soil. The raised garden bed models how previously unusable land can be made into a productive and educational focal point. The tools were needed for both the organic vegetable gardens already existing on the College grounds, and also for use when students maintain the vegetable gardens of community members.
Thank-you to Landcare Australia and Coles for the monies received to help Mount Carmel College extend it’s gardens and to help in our endeavours to model good sustainable practices to the students, staff, families and friends within our community.
